A NEW NETWORK PROJECT FOR THE BERGAMO LAKES

Archaeological and cultural heritage development through integrated site management: the village at Casazza, the cemetery and Tadini Academy of Lovere, and the Predore villa

The project to link together these four sites of archaeological and cultural interest in the territory of the Bergamo Lakes Mountain Community was promoted by the Superintendency after important discoveries were made. It was followed by a cultural enhancement programme drawn up in 2013 thanks to the enthusiasm of the local councils, carefully organized with respect to methods, procedures, funding possibilities and management, and tuned to the “identity value” of the local patrimony. The nature and distinctive features of the landscape were recognized to be important elements of the context of this distributed heritage that have influenced its social and economic development since the Roman period – an epoch that unites the archaeological sites, located at the centre of a dense web of connections between Bergamo, Brescia and Val Camonica. The luxurious villa of Predore was built in a typical lakeside setting on Lake Iseo; it belonged to the distinguished Brescian Nonii family. The established settlement at Lovere is known from its cemetery, containing rare and precious objects. The village of Casazza has provided important evidence of daily life up until late-Roman/Early Medieval times, and stood in a hilly area. It is to be hoped that now this distinctive itinerary can be integrated into a larger system, including the established archaeological sites in the Upper Town of Bergamo, Parre and – on the Po Plain – at Bariano, in the ex-Convento dei Neveri, and the nearby Pagazzano Archaeological Museum.
